With a history of more than 80 years of English soccer, the FA English Premier League competition has been one of the best in the world and attracting a global audience of over 450 million in 150 countries. The league was formed by the leading clubs in the Football League Division One breaking away. Since launched in 1992, twenty teams are competing for the championship of the competition and among them, Manchester United has been the dominant force in the league, winning seven titles in ten years. Other fascinating teams are Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc. The league is also filled with the best players in the world including foreign stars like Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba as well as England's bests, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard.
Manchester Utd. has been definitely the best team in the Premier League especially in 1990s. With its magnificent group of players, the team was at their best during 98-99 season when they took the Quadruple Crown by winning Premier Championship, FA Cup, Toyota Cup, and Champion's League, and they became the first team in history of English soccer to accomplish the honor. Manchester Utd., also known as the "Red Devils" for their red uniforms, has never gone down to Division II, and they have won more championships than any other teams in the league except Liverpool. Since it was established in 1886, Arsenal, as known as "The Gunners", has been one of the three best teams in the league along with Manchester Utd. and Liverpool. The team was first organized by a group of workers in Woolwich, and they named the team, Dial Square. The name was changed to Arsenal FC after they move to Highbury in 1914. Since then the team has won a lot of championships and they are still capable of winning more. Arsenal depends a lot on its foreign forces, especially on the French Players such as the team captain the one of the league's top scorer, Henry, and the midfielder, Pires.
Liverpool is the team that has the most championship trophies in the English Premier League. The team had started as a small church soccer club called St. Domingo Club in 1878. When soccer had become popular in the city of Liverpool, the club changed its name to Everton Club and became a professional team. Then in 1892, the club had divided into two, which are Everton and Liverpool. The team is considered as one of the three best teams in the league, and Steven Gerrard, an incrediblly fast and skilled midfielder of England, is the team's franchise player.
Newcastle United was first started as a small club called New Castle East End and after joining with Newcastle West End, they changed the name to Newcastle United. The team has a long history and won many championship in earlier days. Newcastle players are known as the Magpies because of their black-and-white-striped uniforms. They went down to Division II after 88-89 season but came back up 4 years later. Newcastle is a well-organized, skilled team led by a veteran, Alan Shearer, and Englands' best forward, Michael Owen.
Chelsea were formed and entered the league in 1905. Their early years were uneventful and it wasn't until 1955 when they won their first honour, the league title. However, the late sixties and early seventies were Chelsea's heyday as the popularity of the Kings Road grew and the club became the most stylish team in England. When Jose Mourinho arrived in 2004, his self-confidence quickly spread through the club and they soon started to really live up to expectations, first winning the Carling Cup and then the Barclays Premiership at a canter. While they fell short in the Champions League, there are real signs that Mourinho and Abramovich can lead the Blues on to even greater things in years to come.
