The first, unofficial UEFA Super Cup final was held in 1972 as a joint enterprise between European Champion Clubs’ Cup holders AFC Ajax and 1971/72 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners Rangers FC. Since the tournament found a settled home in Monaco in 1998, there have been no such problems. All subsequent tournaments - which since 2000 have seen the European champions take on the UEFA Cup winners rather than the winners of the defunct Cup Winnners' Cup - have been contested over one leg.
